Our Vintage Omega RAF Pilot Watch was one of only a few white faced pilot’s watches. It was requested by the RAF at the start of the Second World War that watchmakers were to produce a watch, which was white faced, with railroad markers for legibility and accuracy at night. Pilots needed to be able to drop their loads at exactly the right time, so it was necessary that their watches had the ability to be synced together and keep time accurately.  The Omega 30T2 is a very classic yet robust watch with one of the best manual winding, chronometer-rated movements Omega have produced, the caliber 30T2. The original dial is in good condition, signed “Omega Swiss Made” with railroad minutes and original blued-steel hands. Original full-length alloy case, with Omega snapback stainless steel back and fixed bar military lugs.

The watch is in good condition for its age. It comes on a NATO strap and supplied in a ROSH Jewellers presentation box.

The Omega RAF Pilot Watch in More Detail…

The British MOD decided to re-case its old war-time Omega watches with the highly regarded and reliable 30T2 movements in their RAF 6B/159 spitfire pilot’s watches. The watch has chronometer rated movements. Few of these WW” watches we re-dialled in white as this one is, as most of them were done in white. These white dial versions are much rarer and prized by military collectors.

This is a Royal Air Force pilot’s watch which dates from the Second World War.
The 6B/159 designation was for a navigator’s watch – in this period before radar or GPS location an accurate timepiece was essential to calculate the position of the aircraft. The navigator’s watches from this period were supplied by a number of top quality manufacturers including Omega, Jaeger Le-Coultre and Longines. The watches followed a standard specification which included either a white or black dial with Arabic numerals, centre seconds.

The Omega watches were issued by the Air Ministry to pilots and navigators in the RAF (coded 6B/159) and the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. The only difference between the two versions was the code on the case back. Originally the RAF version had chrome plated alloy cases whereas the Navy had chrome plated brass ones. As the brass served better in the salt sea air.

Over the years the original white dial has understandably darkened slightly, however still remains in good condition. As well as around the perimeter the black hour numerals and seconds markers are still strong. The dial holds the full set of original beautifully shaped blue steel hands which were unique to these particular military issue Omegas. The watch is powered by a military spec. Omega manual wind Calibre 30T2 SC movement. The SC denotes that the watch has a centre seconds hand.
